Siren Theatre Co makes theatre that inspires artists and audiences with bold imaginative experiences.

Each play is a celebration of our humanity in all it’s horror, hilarity and complexity.  Poetic texts, unexpected theatricality, despair, glamour, hope and love.

Following the huge success of our 2015 Sydney season of  MISTERMAN by Enda Walsh, performed by Thomas Campbell –  the production played  BACKSPACE, Theatre Royal in Hobart 1 – 4 June, 2016.

MISTERMAN – Sydney Theatre Critics Awards Nominations: Best Independent Production, Best Director ( Kate Gaul), Best Actor (Winner – Thomas Campbell), Best Lighting Design (Winner – Hartley T A Kemp), Best Sound Design (Winner -Nate Edmondson).  Congratulation to all the nominees – Awards Ceremony January 18, 2016

Our work includes classics, contemporary drama and premieres of new Australian plays.  Siren Theatre Co’s audiences range from adults, students and families. We also believe in the value of on-going training and to this end the company runs Acting and Directing Masterclasses for practitioners.

KATE GAUL – Artistic Director

Kate graduated from NIDA (Directing Course 1996) and trained with the Anne Bogart SITI Company (2005). Kate was the Associate Director at the Ensemble Theatre (2004/5) where productions include The Violet Hour, Kimberly Akimbo and Lobby Hero. Other directing credits include Castor + Pollux (Pinchgut), The Cunning Little Vixen (Sydney Chamber Opera), Carmen (Oz Opera), Beautiful (Mudlark Theatre) The Altar Boyz (Ovations Live), Camarilla (Merrigong Theatre Co) Coup D’Etat (MTC), The Gates of Egypt, Our Lady of Sligo, Run Rabbit Run, The Laramie Project, Svetlana in Slingbacks (Company B), Wicked Sisters (Griffin/National tour), Rabbit (Griffin Theatre) and projects for all major drama schools and theatre companies throughout Australia.

As a designer Kate’s credits include Misterman (Siren Theatre Co) Trouble (Drop Bear), Penelope (Siren Theatre Co), English Eccentrics,The Secret Marriage, The Marriage of Figaro (Conservatorium of Music), Four Dogs and a Bone (Brief Candle Productions), Beautiful (Mudlark).

Kate is Artistic Director/Producer of Siren Theatre Co: The Violent Outburst that Drew Me to You (by Finegan Kruckemeyer), Misterman, Penelope, The New Electric Ballroom (By Enda Walsh), The Lunch Hour, Human Resources (By Chris Aronsten) FOX (Monkey Baa/National Tour, 2010), The Seagull (Chekhov), Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Richard 3, Twelfth Night, Duck (by Stella Feehily), eeni meeni mini mo (devised by the company), Hard Swallow (by Mirra Todd), Polly Blue (by Belinda Bradley), Wanna Go Home, Baby? (devised by the company), Connie+ Kevin and the Secret Life of Groceries (by Noelle Janaczweska), Blue Heart (by Caryl Churchill), Frozen (by Michael O’Brien).

Kate is part of the Creative Team for Mardi Gras Parade (2015, 2016), Program Manager Mardi Gras Festival (2016), Festival Director of World Interplay (2008 – 2011), inaugurating Festival Director of 10 minute Cabaret Festival Sydney (2014) and was the Festival Director of Short+Sweet Theatre in Canberra (2013 -2015).

Kate’s play Fat Boy has been performed in Sydney (originally as part of Bondi Feast and then a second production as part of the May Day plays 2013)

Kate has also written and directed two short films Embrace and Cake.
